What is MTSS?

Southwest Middle Mission: Ensuring all students are connected & performing at high levels.

What is MTSS?

MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports, helps us identify students who may be struggling and work together as a team to find the best ways to help.

Our Goal:

  • Give each student the tools and support they need to learn and grow.
  • Be proactive, thoughtful, and responsive to each student’s needs.

How it Works

STEP 1: Identifying Students Who Need Extra Support

  • Teachers monitor progress with data and observations.
  • If challenges continue after classroom support, the student is referred for review.

STEP 2: Getting to Know the Whole Student

  • Create a student profile with academic, attendance, and behavior information.
  • Assign a point person to lead the process and communicate with the family.
  • Gather input from families about student needs and strengths.

STEP 3: Team Planning and First Intervention

  • The grade-level team collects & reviews all data to find the root cause of challenges.
  • Choose an intervention (e.g., small group instruction, check-in/check-out).
  • Share the plan with all of the student’s teachers and guardians.
  • When appropriate, specific strategies for home will be communicated.

STEP 4: Checking In and Adjusting as Needed

  • Review data after giving the intervention time to work.
  • Continue, scale back, or change the approach as needed.
  • If necessary, move to more intensive support options.
